today was a fun day writing… i co-wrote with Logan Garza who is also doing 7in7.
the idea today was to write a song personifying summer and winter, and mourning the loss of someone in those seasons.

7in7 Day 1 – “Breaking”

the most difficult part about 7in7 is having to finish a song idea in 1 day. especially if you’re a perfectionist.

7in7 Rules

7in7 begins tomorrow!! really glad to have so many people joining us for this Fall 7in7. as i was looking through the list of writers, i was struck by how many talented people are a part of this. there are about 315 songwriters a part of this week…and they are from all over the country and the globe!

so, here are the rules of 7in7:

1) start and finish 1 song every day for 7 days. the goal is not to write 7 amazing songs…it’s simply to start and finish a song to stretch creativity and discipline as a writer.

2) old material cannot be used. you can’t brush off the dust from an old song, or one that was started a while ago. it must be a brand new song. phrases & words from old journals can obviously be used…but old songs or uncompleted songs can’t.

3) co-writing with a person is fair game.

4) post the song in some sort of public forum. most people post their songs on a blog, soundcloud, tumblr account, etc. part of the beauty of 7in7 is forcing yourself to be vulnerable with your writing.

5) if you’re on twitter, we can easily follow each other by using the hash-tag #7in7.

Short Documentary Released!

We have been really fortunate to be surrounded by GREAT friends who are GREAT artists. One of those friends is Jeremy Rodgers, who directed a short documentary on bringing our son Amos home from Haiti after the earthquake last year. The short film was picked up by our new friends at Deidox, and was released yesterday. Jeremy did a fantastic job filming this, and another good friend Kyle Lent scored the music for the documentary.
