The Hunt for Red October on dvd Man in the Chair dvdrip

Under the Tuscan Sun divx

This song came specifically from my time in Haiti over the past year. It’s a sort of hopeful lament, if you will. I wanted to capture the feeling of all of creation groaning and yearning to be put back together…for the world to be beautified. Once again, gang vocals were used on this song to capture the feeling of “everyone” singing the melody.

Serendipity full movie The song starts with an old Kimball pump organ at Wire. You can actually hear the manual foot pedals starting to fill the organ bags with air before the first chord hits. We wanted to capture a slow build at the beginning. Much like an orchestra tunes up before the first chord is played, the antique radio sound, the organ, and the vocal lines coming in one at a time illustrate this sort of building and preparing.

The first voice you hear is my oldest son, Cayden. He’s pretty stoked to be a rockstar at the age of five. Then, you hear a couple of other voices (Aaron Cauble, Jimmie Ingram) before the first giant chord is rung.

I also used an old Baldwin Aerosonic Console Piano at Wire for all the piano parts. Also, an 88 Rhodes was used in a few sections including verse 2 and the bridge. Also, the pump organ makes another appearance in the bridge.

Lead vocals and background vocals were tracked using the U87a through the Langevin Dual Vocal Combo. The last few seconds of the track drop down to a sort of AM sounding piano/vocal section. I wanted to capture an old radio/antique sort of sound. To accomplish this, I pulled up the QuickVoice app on my iphone and hit record. Laying it on the studio desk next to my old upright piano, I sang and played the last section. Then, played that recording back through the iphone speaker while holding it up to the U87a vocal mic. The final track recorded is essentially a recording of me playing and singing at the piano through the iphone.

The guitar hook was a stereo track played with the Dusenberg through the same amp/cab config. plus an Orange head through a Port City 2-12 cab. A Tube Screamer was run after a DD20 delay, stacked with a DD5. The reason Jimmie stacked the delays on this track was to get a very open sound. All the distortion breakup was from pushing the heads at high volume rather than using pedal distortion.

The high 16th note chimey chorus guitar was done with a Fender Tele and the same amp config. The Tele was used to change the tone, rather than using different pedal configs. Throughout the verses, the underlying guitar part was created by using the Tele through the same amp config with stacked delays. For ryhym guitars, the Tele and Dusenberg were stacked. These guitars sound very different from each other, so using them together created depth in each track.

Bush played a Fender P Bass with a pick, tuned down to D for a more full sound to match the open, moody, sound of the song.
