This song has been one of my favorites since I wrote it a few years ago. Sections of the verse and choruses were written over an extended period of time and were finally finished in Keystone, CO. After using it on the road for so long, it’s been great to finally record it. Hoping to catch some of the live energy, we pretty much kept it exactly how we play it live.

The piano is this amazing Yamaha G5 6ft 7in Grand Piano at Wire Recording. Joey Benjamin (engineer) is really great at capturing piano sounds, and he did a great job catching an open, dynamic sort of sound. Lead vocals were tracked on a U87a through a Langevin Dual Vocal Combo at Ivey Casa (my home studio). After singing a couple of passes then comping them down to one final vocal track, Aaron doubled the entire vocal melody in all the choruses and bridge. It adds a bit of punch and depth. Emily Ward sang background vocals on this track using a Blue Blackberry through an ADL-600 preamp.

Philip Ellis used an old Gretsch kit and his P.Ellis custom snare (pellisdrums.com The Jackal move ) on this song. After tracking drums, we decided to copy/paste some of the groove of the verses to create a few measure of intro. Taking 2 measures of drums from just one of the room mics created a sort of “squashed drum” effect for the intro before the live drums come in. We also took this same sound and pasted it into the 2nd half of the bridge.

Jimmie played the main guitar part on a Dusenberg through a Divided By Thirteen head and a 65’s cabinet. Pedals used were Fat Boost, Sparkle Drive and a Boss DD20. Using the same amp setups, the verses used stacked delays. DD5 set to 16th notes. DD20 set to dotted 8ths. The second verse added a POG with an RV5 Boss reverb and followed the vocal melody. The same sound was used in the bridge section. Aaron also stacked an octave keys part on verse 2 playing the same exact line as the guitars.

On the choruses, the high chimey guitar part was played on a Telecaster through the same amp setup. On the choruses, the stacked rhythm guitars were created by using the Dusenberg on one track and the Telecaster on the other. In the intro, the POG was used as an overdrive pedal which creates a nice fuzz sort of tone.

Bass signal was run through a splitter, which sent one feed to the Eden head and one feed to an old vintage crusty pre-amp from the 1940’s. Bush used an Eden 550 Traveler head through an Eden Vintage series 4-10 cabinet mic’d. Bush used his Fender Jazz Bass on this track. The bass tracks were re-tracked after Bush was unpleased with the first round. So, this final take was tracked at 3:30am while all other band members slept on random couches in the studio.
