PRODUCTION NOTEBOOK: Let Your Kingdom ComeSeptember 10, 2009 Every THURSDAY, we’ll be posting new production notes from a different song off the new record. These posts are a part of the Production Notebook, which can be found on the MUSIC page. The Notebook gives an inside look at the writing, recording, and creating process of “Between the Beauty & Chaos.”
[4th Entry: LET YOUR KINGDOM COME] download Son of the Mask God has definitely done a work in my family over the 8 years that we’ve been married. Through visiting other countries and ways of living, as well as adoption process of three children, God has been stirring themes of justice and mission. This song came straight from these experiences. I wrote this song at Lousiana Tech in summer of 2008, but it wasn’t finished until later in 2008. The opening pad sound was created by singing vocals into a Blueberry through an ADL-600 pre. i basically sang a 6 or 7 second note, then stacked that with another note until i had a 3-note chord. then, in Pro-Tools, i reversed it to give it a more ambient, weird sort of texture. The opening rhodes sound was played on my Nord Electro2 through a Fender Blues Junior. This rhodes can be heard in most of the hooks and bridge. The pads in Verse 1 were created with the Nord organ. The piano was tracked at Wire, using their Yamaha grand. All of the rhythm and some of the lead guitars were tracked in my home studio. The opening guitar part was played on a Dusenberg guitar through a Carr amp and a Fulltone Fat Boost. We used an SM-57 through an ADL-600 pre. In verse one, Jimmie used a Jerry Jones baritone through a Divided By Thirteen head and 65’s cabinet. Pedals used were MXR Stereo Tremolo and Boss RV-5 Reverb. This baritone guitar was tracked at Wire. For the washy sound in the pre-chorus, Jimmie used a Dusenberg through Divided By Thirteen head and 65’s cab. Using the Boss DD-2, DD-5, and Fat Boost, the DD-20 was set to quarter notes and the DD-5 was set to sixteenth notes. The chimey guitar line in the choruses was a Telecaster through a Carr amp, using Fat Boost, Jetter GS3, Boss DD-20 and DD-5. All the rhythm guitars used the Dusenberg, Divided By, 65’s cab with Fat Boost. The second ryhthm guitar (to create width in the mix, hard-panned) was a tele with the same amp and pedal combination plus Keeley modded Sparkle Drive pedal. Bush played his Fender Jazz Bass through David Eden 550 traveler head and Eden 4×10 Vintage Series cab. Guy Roberts played drums on this song using the same drum set-up as mentioned in previous songs in the notebook. download Credo Lead vocals were tracked with a U-87a through Langevin Dual Vocal Combo. Lead vocals were doubled in the choruses. Although the background vocals in all the verses sound like a girl, it’s actually me singing falsetto. This part was doubled, then hard-panned. Hey Aaron, met you Austin during a conference. Was wanting to do some of your music at our church and was wondering how to get a hold of your chord charts. Is there any possibility of that? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you
